The 20% empty running reported for double decks in 2010 is likely to rise as double decking becomes more widespread beyond the parcel and pallet networks. Unless backhauling capabilities are factored in to double deck operations.

Backhaul-ability is a critical factor for LSP’s considering double decking – without a backhaul, any potential volumetric savings can be wasted, making the trip unviable.

Potential solutions include: curtain-sided double deckers, which offer versatile un/loading via fork-lifts; specialist double deck hauliers (e.g. 2Win, who offer a trans-European, one-way double deck service); and specialist double deck loading systems installed at manufacturers’ sites to support retail backhauling.

To facilitate cost effective backhauling from retail suppliers’, Transdek offers double
deck lift: finance options; rapid install and relocation capability; and optional key-code or swipe-card lockable loadhouse doors to ensure secure, exclusive access and use by the owner/ operator.
